Otter transcript missing audio when using a Chrome browser

Chrome added an experimental feature, Echo Cancellation, to remove any sound played out of the speakers from the microphone signal on the same computer. When the experimental feature is enabled, the microphone will only pick up your voice when recording using Chrome on the same computer as the audio playback. Playback recording will also be affected, such as recording audio from YouTube or audio played on your computer speaker. All Chrome versions are affected.

An example of where you may experience this issue: 

• Recording an online meeting using Chrome on the same computer. Otter will not record speakers in the meeting. Only your voice will be recorded. 
• Recording a YouTube video using Chrome on the same computer. The YouTube audio will not be recorded. 
• Recording audio playback such as QuickTime using Chrome on the same computer. The audio from the video will not be recorded. 

Note: This does not affect any Otter recording integration or features, such as OtterPilot, Zoom Live Notes, or Zoom Sync. Only direct recordings on Otter using Chrome are affected. For all Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams meetings, we recommend using OtterPilot.

Solution

Disable the experimental feature in Chrome.

1. Open Chrome.
2. In the address browser, type chrome://flags and hit ENTER.
3. In the search bar, type Echo Cancellation.
   
4. The Chrome-wide-echo-cancellation feature appears under the Available tab.
   
   
   
5. Click the drop-down and click Disabled.
   
6. Click Relaunch to restart your browser.
   
7. Verify that the experimental feature is disabled by repeating steps 2-3 and confirm that it has been disabled.
