Otter AI Chat Overview

Otter AI Chat is a powerful tool that helps you ask questions, generate summaries, and get insights from your meetings and conversations. You can use AI Chat to ask about meeting content, request more details about what was said, or create summaries for emails, reports, social media posts, and more.

Rollout: The new AI Chat experience 2.0 is now available on Otter Web & Desktop. The mobile Otter app currently uses the previous version of AI Chat 1.0, but will soon get the new experience in future updates. See our FAQs for more details.

Note: All accounts are opted into AI Chat by default. If you do not see the option to use AI Chat in your account or workspace, please have your admin contact our Otter Support Team.

AI Chat works across all of your conversations in Otter, including meetings shared with you. It can answer questions about past meetings, provide context from channels, and help you quickly find important information without manually searching transcripts. AI Chat is available during live meetings and after meetings end, so you can continue asking questions and generating insights at any time.

✅ Private by default

Your AI Chat conversations are visible only to you unless you choose to share them. This allows you to explore ideas, draft content, and review insights privately before collaborating with others.

✅ The same chat experience everywhere

AI Chat is accessed the same way across Otter, whether you’re on the Homepage, inside a Conversation, or in a Channel.

Note: AI Chat 2.0 is available on web and desktop, while the mobile app still uses AI Chat 1.0. You may notice some differences in experience during this transition. Refer to our FAQs for more details.

✅ Contextual answers

AI Chat automatically understands the content you’re viewing and uses that context to generate more relevant responses. Whether you’re in a live meeting or reviewing a past conversation, AI Chat provides answers tailored to you.

Disclaimer: Responses from Otter AI Chat are based on existing AI language data models and may not always reflect the most up-to-date information or be factually correct. Users should exercise their own judgment and critical thinking when relying on responses from AI Chat. By interacting with AI Chat, you acknowledge and agree to the disclaimers. If you do not agree with any parts of the disclaimers, please refrain from using AI Chat.

AI Chat sessions

All AI Chat sessions are private to you across your conversations. You can start a new chat session at any time or return to a previous session to continue the conversation. AI Chat maintains context within each session, making it easy to manage conversation history and seamlessly switch between past and new chats.

To view past sessions, click the menu in the upper-left corner of the AI Chat page or panel. From there, you can reopen any previous session and continue asking questions or generating insights.

Note: Only AI Chat 2.0 sessions appear in the dropdown on web and desktop. Chat 1.0 AI Chat history (Private Chat) was migrated and is available as a session history entry at the bottom called Previous Chat History. For Conversation Chat, history was not migrated to Chat 2.0. If you need help accessing older conversations, please contact Otter Support.

For any questions regarding accessing older conversations, refer to our FAQ.

Context for AI Chat

Interact with AI Chat seamlessly across all your conversations on the Homepage, in Conversation, or in Channel. Start in one conversation and end up in another anywhere within Otter. Ask questions and pull additional details anytime. Mention a conversation, channel, or folder to add context to your chat. You can use search to quickly filter and find what you’re looking for.

Select the item you want to add, and it will appear next to the @ symbol in your message.

For every response, you can see the sources AI Chat used to generate its answer. Click on any of the added context to view the source directly. Otter lets you add or remove conversations, channels, or folders within the same chat session, so you can refine context as you ask questions and uncover insights.

Click Show thinking to see how AI Chat generated the answer.

Conversations used to generate the response appear as blue hyperlinks with the conversation title. Click the link to open the original conversation referenced in the answer.

AI Chat modes

AI Chat offers two response modes — Express and Advanced — designed for different levels of reasoning, integration, and speed. Switch between modes as needed. Learn more about AI Chat modes.

AI Chat connectors

Plan: AI Chat connector availability may vary by Otter plan. Additional connectors may be introduced over time and may be subject to plan eligibility and feature availability. Refer to our pricing page for the most up-to-date information.

AI Chat connectors are integrations that allow Otter to securely access external tools, files, and data sources, such as cloud storage, messaging platforms, or CRM systems. By using connectors, users can search for or create documents, pull in real-time information, and automate workflows without leaving AI Chat, making operations more powerful, context-aware, and useful for everyday work.

Add a connector

The steps below will be similar for all connectors. You can manage and add connectors directly from the AI Chat menu or on the Integrations page.

Click Add next to the connector.
Sign in to your account and review the information. Click Allow to connect.
AI Chat can now pull information from connected sources. Toggle connectors on or off to control what’s included in your search scope.

Note: AI Chat connectors are only available in Advanced mode.
