You can connect a microphone to your computer's audio input port, a USB port, using Bluetooth, or to an audio interface connected to your computer. You can also use your computer's built-in microphone to record audio. We recommend these USB and mobile microphones.
Note: Using a Bluetooth headset or speaker can affect the audio quality and therefore, the quality of the transcription. Learn more about factors of transcription accuracy.
Also, be aware that any noise cancellation features may prevent Otter from picking up audio from your speakers. For the purposes of recording audio from your speakers, please ensure that your audio settings are not filtering out what you want to record.
Change your browser and mobile settings
If you are using an external microphone on your computer, you will need to allow permission in your browser to use your microphone when prompted. Learn about permissions in Chrome, Safari, and Firefox.
When using a mobile device, grant access to Otter to access the microphone.
- In iOS, go to Settings > Privacy > Microphone
- In Android, go to Settings > Apps > Otter > Permissions > Microphone > Allow
Using a headset during a virtual meeting or class
In general, we do not recommend using a headset during a virtual meeting or class that Otter is transcribing. Because you are not able to change the audio output within your computer to Otter, the audio will not be captured by Otter and therefore, will not be transcribed.
Third-party noise cancellation software
Any noise cancellation features on your computer, mobile device, or headset may prevent Otter from picking up audio from your speakers. For the purposes of recording audio from your speakers, temporarily disable any noise cancellation features.
