External microphones
You can connect a microphone to your computer or mobile device's audio input port, a USB port, using Bluetooth, or to an audio interface connected to your computer. You can also use your computer's built-in microphone to record audio. We recommend these USB, mobile, and wearable microphones.
Change your browser and mobile settings
If you are using an external microphone on your computer, you will need to allow permission in your browser to use your microphone when prompted. Learn about permissions in Chrome, Safari, and Firefox.
When using a mobile device, grant access to Otter to access the microphone.
- In iOS, go to Settings > Privacy > Microphone
- In Android, go to Settings > Apps > Otter > Permissions > Microphone > Allow
Using a headset during a virtual meeting or class
In general, we do not recommend using a headset during virtual meetings or classes when using Otter on a web browser to record. Although headsets have an external microphone, the audio from the meeting or class plays within the headset, preventing Otter from recording and transcribing it. Instead, we recommend using OtterPilot for virtual meetings and classes, which allows you to use a headset.
Third-party noise cancellation software
Any noise cancellation features on your computer, mobile device, or headset may prevent Otter from picking up audio from your speakers. For the purposes of recording audio from your speakers, temporarily disable any noise cancellation features.
