Otter lets you easily delete your conversations at any time. Learn what to expect and how to delete a conversation in Otter. When a conversation is deleted:
- Conversation(s) will be immediately unshared from all users and Channels.
- Conversation(s) will be moved to the Trash folder for 30 days.
- After 30 days, the conversation and all associated data will be permanently deleted from our servers.
Delete a conversation
Follow the instructions below to delete a conversation on the desktop or web version of Otter.
- Go to the conversation you want to delete, click the three-dot menu, and select Delete.
- Carefully review the pop-up information. Click OK to move the conversation to Trash.
- The conversation will remain in Trash for 30 days before being permanently deleted. If you want to permanently delete it sooner, follow the steps below to empty the Trash.
Bulk delete multiple conversations Delete one or more conversations at a time

You can bulk-delete conversations in the My Conversations and All Conversations views. Hover over the checkbox next to a conversation, select one or more conversations, then click Delete.

Carefully review the pop-up information. Click OK to move the conversation(s) to Trash.
- The conversation(s) will remain in Trash for 30 days before being permanently deleted. If you want to permanently delete it sooner, follow the steps below to empty the Trash.
Permanently delete conversations from the Trash Conversations will be automatically deleted from the Trash after 30 days, or delete them immediately
Conversations will be permanently deleted 30 days after they’re moved to the Trash folder. The time remaining until deletion is displayed on the right.
Follow these steps to delete all conversations from the Trash folder immediately.

Go to the Trash folder and click Empty Trash Now.

Carefully review the pop-up. Click Delete Forever to permanently delete all conversations.

All conversations in the Trash folder have been permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.

You can also manually select individual conversations to restore or permanently delete from the Trash.
Mobile App
Delete a conversation on mobile
Follow the instructions below to delete a conversation on the mobile Otter app.
- Open the Otter mobile app.
- You can quickly delete a conversation by long-pressing it and selecting Delete,
or by opening the conversation, tapping the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner, and selecting Delete. - Carefully review the delete prompt. Tap Delete to move the conversation to Trash.
- The conversation will remain in Trash for 30 days before being permanently deleted. If you want to permanently delete it sooner, follow the steps below to delete conversations immediately.
Permanently delete conversations on mobile
Conversations will be permanently deleted 30 days after they’re moved to the Trash folder. The time remaining until deletion is displayed on the right.
Follow these steps to delete all conversations from the Trash folder immediately.
- Tap on Account in the lower right corner. Select Trash.
- Tap Empty trash now or select individual conversations to permanently delete them.
- Carefully review the prompt, then tap Delete to permanently delete all conversations from the Trash folder.
- All conversations in the Trash folder have been permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.
FAQs
Can I recover a deleted conversation?
Deleted conversations can be restored from the Trash for up to 30 days after they’re deleted.
Once a conversation is permanently deleted from the Trash or is automatically removed after 30 days, it can’t be restored or recovered.
Does deleting a conversation credit those minutes to my account?
No. Transcription minutes are counted when a conversation is recorded or transcribed.
Deleting a conversation doesn’t restore or credit transcription minutes back to your monthly usage or billing cycle.
Does the conversation stay on the server after deleting?
No. Once a conversation is permanently deleted from the Trash, the conversation and its associated data are removed from Otter’s servers.
Why can't I delete a conversation that was shared with me?
Only the conversation owner can delete a shared conversation.
If a conversation has been shared with you and you no longer want to see it, contact the conversation owner and ask them to either:
- Remove your access to the conversation, or
- Delete the conversation if it’s no longer needed.
Why is the delete button grayed out?
If you select a conversation shared with you in All Conversations, the delete option will be grayed out. You can only delete conversations that you own.
