Set up voice for Otter Chat
Otter AI Chat with voice requires Otter Notetaker to join your Zoom meetings. Set up Otter Notetaker to automatically join your meetings to ensure voice chat is always available.
- Connect your calendar to Otter.
- Set up Otter Notetaker to join your Zoom meetings.
- Manage your Otter Notetaker settings.
- Manage your voice chat settings in Account Settings > Meetings.
Settings you can control for voice chat
Voice Chat
- This will allow meeting participants to use verbal commands and questions to prompt Otter Chat during a meeting. Learn more about available commands and actions for Otter AI Voice Chat.
Past meetings within recurring series
- When using Voice Chat in a meeting that is part of a recurring series, Otter Chat will be able to pull from past meetings in that series. Learn more about recurring meetings.
Meetings shared to public channels in your Workspace
- Meetings that have been shared to a public Channel in your Workspace will be available for Otter Chat to pull from.

- Ask questions about using Otter, such as functionality or info about the product.
Admin controls for the Workspace
Admins can control the setting to enable or disable voice chat for members in the Workspace.
- As an admin, navigate to Workspace > Manage Workspace > Settings.
- Under Voice Chat, toggle the setting on or off.

When toggling the setting, the admin can apply it to all members or only members who have not changed the setting previously.
Note: There is no way to lock the voice chat setting for members. Members of a Workspace can still adjust their individual settings for their account.- Apply to all - will apply to all members and override individual account settings.

Available commands and actions for Otter AI Chat voice
Voice commands are available for Otter Chat. The list below is a few examples of commands you can try but do not represent the only ones available.
Create an action item
Create an action item directly in the Otter conversation.

- “Hey Otter, add an action item for [task description] for [person]”
- “Hey Otter, create a task: [task details]”
- “Hey Otter, note down [task details] as an action item”
The action item will appear shortly in the Otter conversation under the Summary tab.
Schedule a meeting
Create a Google Calendar link with pre-filled details.
🗣️ Voice Examples:
- “Hey Otter, schedule a meeting next Wednesday at 10am in the morning with Gordan”
- “Hey Otter, schedule a follow up for us to chat next week Tuesday at 9am”
Otter AI Chat will generate a calendar event. Click the link in the Otter conversation or Zoom chat window to pre-fill.
Review the event and click Save to add it to your calendar.
Stop or Pause/Resume the recording
Stop, pause, and resume the meeting using voice chat.

Note: For automatic resuming of a recording, a message will be sent to the Zoom Chat to notify that the recording is being resumed.
Send an email
Use Otter AI Chat to send an email of the conversation. You can send a variety of information in the email: Summary, action items, generated insights, and more.
- For users in the Workspace or known contacts, Otter Chat automatically finds and populates the email.
- If an email is not found for the user, you can provide the email directly to Otter Chat through voice.

- “Hey Otter, send Lyla Fern a summary of this meeting via email.”

Otter will generate an email. Click the link in the Otter conversation or Zoom chat window to pre-fill an email draft.

Best practices
- Ensure Otter Notetaker is able to join your meeting.
- Manage your Otter Notetaker, chat, and voice settings in Account Settings > Meetings.
- If you need to interrupt Otter AI Chat voice after saying a prompt/question, Otter will stop the output of the answer. Ask Otter Chat voice again to get more information.
FAQs
Can any meeting participant use Otter AI Chat with voice during the meeting?
- Yes.
- Any meeting participant can use Otter AI Chat verbal commands or actions anytime during the meeting, as long as Otter Notetaker is present in the meeting.
- The Otter Chat prompter will show as the owner of the OtterPilot.
Can I change the background of the Otter Notetaker AI Chat in the meeting?
- No.
- The background cannot be customized at this time.
How long can I pause a recording using Otter AI Chat?
- The recording can be paused indefinitely until the user resumes or the meeting ends.
Can I verbally say ‘resume’ to resume a recording after pausing?
- No.
- At this time, users will need to type ‘resume’ into Otter Chat to resume a recording.
- Verbal command will be supported in future updates.
Does pausing a meeting recording still count towards my monthly minutes?
- Yes.
- Pausing a recording will still count towards your plan’s monthly minutes.
I don’t use Google Calendar. Can I have Otter Chat schedule in Microsoft Outlook instead?
- No.
- Otter AI Chat currently only supports scheduling and pre-filling a link for Google Calendar.
- Microsoft Outlook support will come in future updates.
Do I have to click ‘Save’ each time after scheduling?
- Yes.
- Otter AI Chat will pre-fill and create the event for you in Google Calendar, but you will need to review and click ‘Save’ to save the calendar event.
I don’t use Gmail. Can I have Otter Chat generate an email for Microsoft Outlook instead?
- No.
- Otter AI Chat currently only supports creating an email draft for Gmail.
- Microsoft Outlook support will come in future updates.
The option for Otter AI Chat with voice is missing. How do I enable that?
- Voice requires Otter AI Chat to be enabled for your account or Workspace.
- If your admin has opted your Workspace out of Otter AI Chat, voice will not be available as well.
- Have your admin reach out to our Otter Support Team to request it be enabled for your Workspace.
Note: If Otter AI Chat is enabled for your Workspace and account, but you do not see the voice option, the feature has not yet been rolled out to your account. Please check back later, as the feature is slowly being rolled out to all accounts.
Can I turn off the Zoom video for Otter Notetaker?
- Yes.
- Voice Chat enabled will show the Otter Notetaker participant with the Zoom background screen.
- Voice Chat disabled will show the Otter Notetaker with the Zoom video background off, defaulting to the name.
- You can manage Voice Chat in Account Settings > Meetings.
